What is a Dental Crown?

You’re likely familiar with the basic concept of a dental crown: a cap that is made to resemble a tooth. This cap can be placed on a natural tooth, completely covering it in order to strengthen it and protect it from further harm. The crowns provided at our office are made out of ceramic materials, which can be shaded to match the appearance of your enamel.

Dental crowns can be used to address all kinds of dental issues. We may suggest having a crown placed if:

  • You have a tooth that was badly damaged in an accident.
  • You have a tooth that has been weakened to the point where it might break.
  • You just had a root canal treatment performed.
  • You want to improve the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth.

The Dental Crown Process

It would typically take two appointments to get a dental crown made the traditional way. The first appointment would involve removing enamel from the tooth in question before capturing an impression. Then you would wear a temporary crown while the permanent version is made at a separate dental lab. The completed crown would be placed on your tooth during the second appointment.

At our office, however, it only takes one visit to get a dental crown thanks to our state-of-the-art CEREC technology! Once we have prepared your tooth, your crown can be made by an in-office milling machine based on a scan of your smile. After the crown has been finished, we can make any necessary adjustments before placing it on your tooth right away. The process can often be finished in just a couple of hours – no need to wait weeks for the final restoration.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Protecting your tooth with a dental crown can prevent existing damage from growing worse and help you avoid more complex procedures later down the line. Also, a dental crown can improve the appearance of damaged teeth and help you feel more confident about showing off your smile, and it can improve your ability to chew all kinds of foods. Lastly, when it comes to longevity, a well-cared-for dental crown can potentially last for 15 years – sometimes longer.
